Yellow fever is a dangerous disease caused by a virus which is transmitted by infected mosquitoes that can also transmit dengue fever, Zika virus and chikungunya fever. Yellow fever is found mainly in certain tropical countries in Africa and South America.
The most common symptoms are fever, muscle pain with prominent backache, headache, loss of appetite and nausea or vomiting.
A small proportion of those infected with the yellow fever virus will develop severe disease. Symptoms of severe disease include: jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, stomach pain with vomiting and problems with liver and kidney function.
There is currently no specific curative treatment and half of those that develop severe disease will die within 7–10 days. However, Mangal Pharmacy can administer Stamaril injection by Sanofi as a vaccine to provide immunity to the virus. The vaccine is licenced for use in clinically appropriate individuals aged 9 months and over. A single dose is sufficient to provide protection for most people for life.
The yellow fever vaccine is recommended for people who are travelling to:
You should be vaccinated at least 10 days before you travel to allow enough time for the vaccine to work. Sometimes the risks of being vaccinated outweigh the benefits. Hence, an individual risk assessment is carried out prior to each vaccination. Your booking confirmation email will contain a link to an essential form. Please access and submit that form as soon as possible. At your appointment, you will be issued with the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) or a medical letter of exemption.
Please provide at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations to qualify for a refund. We reserve the right to charge an administration fee for a cancelled booking. The Yellow Fever Injection/Medical Letter of Exemption service is only available at our Greenwich branch.
